Description
The Covey is a mid 19th-century outhouse associated with Pear Tree Cottage, located on High Street in Turvey. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and features a concrete tile roof. The building is a single-storey structure with an attic. The north gable end facing the road has decorative bargeboards and includes a blocked attic window beneath a timber lintel, along with a four-light window on the ground floor. The east elevation has a door on the left side, a two-light casement window with glazing bars, and a blocked window under a timber lintel.
Inside, the roof is exposed, showcasing common rafters made from split tree trunks. The Covey, along with Pear Tree Cottage, was built as part of the estate of Turvey Abbey, which is situated to the east. At one point, The Covey served as a shop and workshop. Both buildings are depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1883 and 1900, and they are part of a group of similar mid 19th-century estate cottages located at numbers 1-2 High Street and numbers 1-10 Abbey Square.
The Covey is recognized for its craftsmanship and vernacular style, enhanced by decorative bargeboarding, and it holds significant group value with Pear Tree Cottage, contributing to the historical context of the Turvey Abbey estate cottages.
