Description
The United Reformed Church, originally an Independent chapel, was built in 1863 for local resident William Ackroyd. It features polychrome brick with some stone dressings and has a slate roof, designed in the Italianate style. The church's exterior is decorated with Corinthian pilasters on all sides, and there are red brick bands at the sill level and just below the capitals. All openings are topped with polychrome semi-circular arches, and there is simplified blind arcading beneath the cornice. The east gable end has a central gabled porch with a double door accessed by three steps. The doorway features a semi-circular arch supported by Corinthian columns. Above the porch are two windows flanked by Corinthian columns, with an oculus above, all set within a larger arch. There is one window in each side bay, and the door and side bay windows have dripstones with carved stops.
