Description
Chawston Lodge is a house dating from around 1600, with alterations and additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It has a timber-framed core that is covered with external render and features mock timber frame embellishments. The roof is covered with asbestos slate and has a central brick ridge stack. The house has a lobby entrance plan and consists of two bays over two stories, with a half-hipped extension added to the east gable and a gabled porch added to the front in the 20th century. The front elevation has 20th-century window frames, and the rear roof slope features 20th-century wedge dormers.
Inside, there is a significant preservation of the original layout, with a central stack and back-to-back hearths serving the ground floor rooms, both of which have 20th-century additions. The ground floor features chamfered spine beams with decorative stops that support chamfered joists in both rooms. An inserted opening through the studded east wall provides access to the 20th-century added bay. The first floor has two chambers at different levels, both displaying exposed wall framing and braced jowl posts at the corners. There are cambered tie beams within the gables and to the central truss, and an advanced hearth beam in the east chamber supports the hearth hood.
