Description

This is an early 17th-century house that was extended in 1733, with further alterations in the mid-19th century and late 20th century. The house is timber-framed and has a rough-cast exterior with a tile roof. The original 17th-century range is at the front, with an 18th-century range placed parallel behind it, slightly projecting at the west end. The house has two storeys and an attic, with two gabled dormers. The first floor and attic are jettied, supported by console brackets. There are two windows to the front, with timber cross-windows. The ground floor has two 16-pane sash windows, and a central entrance with a 20th-century door. A flat-roofed porch, dating to 1733, is set back against the rear range. The porch has a blind window on the upper floor and a band above a semi-circular-headed opening on the ground floor. A 17th-century door, with decorative strap hinges and studs, is at the rear of the porch. A rainwater head on the porch is inscribed "1733/ B/ IA”. The rear elevation is brick and has rubbed brick heads and keystones above the windows. Inside, there is an open-well staircase with turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and a closed moulded string. A historic ‘dog wheel’ is preserved in the kitchen, though the machinery used to drive a spit has been removed. Some 17th-century panelling remains in the front left-hand room. On the first floor, the rear room in the 18th-century section is completely panelled with large raised and fielded panels.
