Description

Three houses, built in 1745 for Jacob Cottrell, and altered in the mid-19th century and late 20th century. The houses are constructed of brick, partly rendered, with a hipped tile roof and rear stacks. They are three storeys high, with a stone-coped parapet. Rusticated pilasters mark each corner, and there are two windows each on the left and right, plus two in the centre, divided by flat pilasters. The windows are boxed sash windows, with plastered wedge lintels and a sill band. The second floor windows are similar, with nine panes to each sash. The ground floor has five boxed sash windows. An entrance to a passageway (leading to numbers 5 and 7) is located to the right of the two left-hand windows; it features a two-leaf door with raised and fielded panels. Number 9’s entrance, at the right-hand corner, is approached by three stone steps and has a flat wooden canopy, a three-pane overlight, and a six-panelled door. Rainwater pipes are located between the two windows to the left and the two to the right. These pipes originally had a square section lead pipe, now replaced with circular cast iron to the right and on the ground floor to the left. Both rainwater pipes have ornate heads inscribed “1745/C /IE”.
