Description
The Canal Maintenance Buildings and Lock Cottage in Stourport on Severn is a Grade II listed structure, originally built around 1776 as an iron warehouse, with extensions added in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of painted brick and topped with a Welsh slate roof. The original two-storey warehouse section to the north is mostly open to the roof and features an inserted floor in part of the structure. This section has three bays, a round-arched central doorway, and casement windows with cambered brick heads on the north elevation, along with a curved corner to the northwest. The southeast gable is coped and has a blocked oculus.
Around 1800, the building was extended to the south with a hipped-roof wing that has rounded corners and wide casement windows on the south elevation, one of which is blocked. An early 19th-century wing was added parallel to this, likely for domestic use, featuring paired windows with flat arched heads. There is a blocked doorway between the two wings, with the current entrance located in an added porch to the west. The northwest elevation of the warehouse has a giant opening that is now partly glazed, and dentilled eaves bands run throughout the structure. Inside the northern range, the roof features a king-post design with six trusses radiating from a single pilaster, spanning the full height of the curved space.
