Description

The building at 66 and 67 High Street comprises a late 18th century house and warehouse, with associated cottages attached to the rear. It is a functional grouping that evolved through the 19th century. The front range is brick, now stuccoed, with a tiled roof and three storeys, featuring a regular three-window arrangement, with the centre slightly projecting. The upper floors have nine-pane hornless sash windows in reveals, set beneath voussoired heads with key blocks. A 19th-century entablature sits above the modern shop window on the ground floor, and there are modillion eaves. Brick end stacks are visible externally. The rear wing, originally a warehouse and later cottages, has 20th-century windows and a dormer. The warehouse features a doorway with pilasters, panelled reveals, and a flat canopy. Remaining loading gear and a second-floor goods hatch are also visible. Lower floors have windows with elliptical arches, now with renewed casements, all beneath a gable with corbelled brick kneelers. The rear cottages, formerly a pair of buildings, have renewed casements within window arches (flat on the first floor, elliptical on the ground floor). A blocked door is present to the left, and another doorway to the right has a 20th-century lean-to glazed porch. The rear elevation has two small windows with simple iron casements, along with a ridge and external end stack. Associated buildings, including a curing house, have been demolished.
