Description
No. 5 Welch Gate is a house that has been converted into a shop and flat. It was originally built in 1637 and was refronted in the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. The building features a timber frame that is clad in brick and has a tiled roof with gable end stacks.
It stands three storeys tall and has a dentilled brick cornice. The front has two windows on the upper floors, which are sashes with tripartite glazing set under segmental heads. The second floor has two-light easements. On the ground floor, there is a central entrance leading to the shop, which has a half-glazed door. To the left of the entrance is a three-light shop window, and to the right is a four-pane sash that is part of the shop window, all covered by a shallow flat canopy supported by scroll brackets. The left-hand corner features an entrance with a wooden architrave and a plain door, with a doorhead that displays a shield inscribed with "R/ RM/ 1637" in relief. Inside, several chamfered and stopped beams can be seen.
