Description
The Hurd Memorial is a chest tomb located about 5 metres north of the north aisle of the Church of St James in Hartlebury. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of ashlar in the Gothick style. The tomb features a flat top with a carved bishop's mitre, complete with tassels and a crozier in low relief. It has a moulded cornice and Gothick panels on the frieze, with projecting corners that include trefoil-headed panels. The long sides of the tomb have two recessed panels with ogee-trefoil heads, and arms capped by swags of drapery between the panels. The west end of the tomb is inscribed with "Richard Hurd/ Bishop of Worcester/ Died XXVIII May/ MDCCCVIII/ Aged LXXXVIII".
