HARTLEBURY CP HARTLEBURY SO 87 SW 1/68 Gibbons memorial about 8 metres north-west of tower of Church of St James

GV II

Cross. c1900. Ashlar. Three steps in square plan to square base rising to octagonal top with quatrefoil panels to sides, octagonal cross shaft capped by Latin cross. Brass plate on south side of steps: "To the Glory of God and in thankful remembrance of/ Edward James Gibbons Barrister-at-law, son of Benjamin &/ Charlotte Gibbons of Waresley House, who died at sea Jan: 23d 1900/ Aged 40 on his way to South Africa with the City Imperial Volunteers/ This Cross is dedicated by his brothers, sisters and friends/ Bear ye one another's burdens and so fulfil the law of Christ". Located in a prominent position near entrance to church.
