Description

The Gibbons Memorial, located about 8 meters north-west of the tower of the Church of St James, is a cross built around 1900. It is made of ashlar and features three steps in a square plan that lead up to a square base. The memorial rises to an octagonal top with quatrefoil panels on its sides, and it has an octagonal cross shaft capped by a Latin cross. On the south side of the steps, there is a brass plate that reads: "To the Glory of God and in thankful remembrance of Edward James Gibbons Barrister-at-law, son of Benjamin & Charlotte Gibbons of Waresley House, who died at sea Jan: 23d 1900 Aged 40 on his way to South Africa with the City Imperial Volunteers. This Cross is dedicated by his brothers, sisters and friends. Bear ye one another's burdens and so fulfil the law of Christ." The memorial is prominently situated near the entrance to the church.
