Description
The Old Cottage is a house dating from the 18th century, with earlier remains that may date back to the 16th century. It is constructed of squared limestone and features remnants of a cruck frame, topped with a hipped stone slate roof. The building has two storeys.
On the north wall, there is a window with plain reveals on each floor. To the left, a door with plain reveals is sheltered by a stone slated pitched hood. The door frame's lintel is inscribed with "W 175- V," which may indicate when the timber-framed wall was replaced by the current front wall. To the right, there is a chimney stack that has a very small window in its front wall, and a straight joint suggests that this part is older than the rest of the front wall. A mid-20th century lean-to addition is attached to the west wall, which has two dormers above it.
Inside, the front room features a stone inglenook fireplace and a chamfered main joist that runs from the front to the back of the house, with the common joists laid flat. The partition wall between the front and back ground floor rooms includes a cruck truss. The western blade of the truss is visible from the staircase and has an outrider and a spur that has been sawn through. A collar is halved across this blade, while the eastern cruck blade can be seen on the first floor.
