Description

The Firs is a house dating from the late 16th to 17th century, which incorporates remains of a 15th-century cruck structure. It has been altered in the 20th century. The building is constructed of ironstone rubble, with the rear and left gable featuring frequent bands of pale limestone rubble. The front has roughcast eaves beneath a raised 20th-century pantile roof, which was formerly thatched. To the left, there is a 17th-century ashlar chimney made of pale limestone, complete with moulded necking and a cornice. A matching chimney between the left bays has been rebuilt in concrete in the 20th century.

The house is two storeys high and consists of three bays. The windows are 20th-century wooden casements with two and three lights, featuring horizontal glazing bars and wooden lintels. The rear windows still retain 16th to 17th-century bonded jambs made of pale Ketton limestone. A 20th-century door is located in a gabled wooden porch between the right bays. There is also an additional 19th-century bay to the right, which has a slate roof, a brick chimney, and a three-light wooden casement on the ground floor.

Inside, there is a chamfered arch-braced cruck truss between the right bays and another cruck blade incorporated into the adjacent 16th to 17th-century chimney. This chimney features a re-used 15th to 16th-century moulded and embattled wooden lintel above the ground floor fireplace, while the left bay contains a moulded stone fireplace. The central ground floor room has heavy stop-chamfered spine and side beams.
