Description

This is a watermill dating from the early to mid-19th century, with machinery likely updated later in the 19th century. The building is constructed of brick with roughcast rendering, and has a plain tile roof with gable ends. The layout appears to be the result of three distinct builds. The central main section is a three-storey, four-bay structure with casement windows with glazing bars in segmental-headed openings; a doorway is on the left side, with a first-floor loading door above. A short, later 19th-century extension covers the wheelpit on the east end and has a glazed door and a three-light casement window. A lower two-storey, two-bay range is attached to the west end, featuring sash windows and a glazed door on the right side, with a loading door in the west gable.

The interior retains virtually complete machinery, including an entirely iron overshot waterwheel measuring 10 feet in diameter by 9 feet wide – unusually wide for a corn mill. The gear layout is standard, featuring a pit wheel, wallower, great spur wheel, and stone nuts. The great spur wheel has well-cast wooden teeth. Two pairs of millstones remain, with two more pairs missing; disengaging and regulating machinery is also present. A sack hoist is partially intact.
