Description
No. 1 High Street is a house and shop dating from the early 19th century, with later alterations. The building is constructed of brick, rendered with lined stucco, and features a Welsh-slate roof with a shallow pitch, deep eaves soffit, a cornice, and a brick stack at the right end.
The exterior consists of three storeys and has a two-window range. On the second floor, there are horned 6/6 sash windows with cambered heads and deeper reveals. The first floor features a plat band and casements with 4/4 panes, margin lights, moulded dado panels, and shutters. These windows open onto a decorative cast-iron verandah that has a hipped painted lead roof and a wooden floor, with console and paterae frieze on the underside and wooden end brackets. The ground floor shopfront includes two canted bay windows of plate glass with deep mullions flanking an entrance that has an enriched architrave, panelled reveals, a 20th-century door, and two stone steps. There is also a wood-framed doorway at the left end leading to a side passage. The building has a plinth.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, it is said to be on the site of the former Kings Head Inn and was in use as a chemist's shop by 1814.
