Description

Lower Hollowfields Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-17th century, with late 19th-century additions and restoration completed in the late 20th century. The building features a combination of timber framing with brick and rendered infill, as well as brick replacement walling and additions, topped with plain tiled roofs. It has a hall and cross-wing plan, with the hall consisting of two framed bays oriented on an east/west axis. A large external chimney with offsets is located on the north elevation of the east bay, while the cross-wing has two framed bays at the east gable end. The structure is single storey with an attic that includes dormers.

The timber framing includes four panels from the sill to the wall-plate, long straight braces across the lower corners, and short straight braces across the upper corners. The west gable end of the hall features a collar and tie-beam truss with three struts to the collar and V-struts in the apex. The cross-wing has similar trusses with two struts to the collar.

On the north front elevation, all windows are from the 20th century. The hall has a ground-floor 2-light and 3-light casement, along with a gabled dormer featuring a 2-light casement. There is a 19th-century stack to the right of the roof pitch and an attic light in the west gable end. The cross-wing gable end has two single-light casements flanking a central 20th-century gabled brick porch, which includes side lights and a 20th-century door, with an attic light above. A multi-paned door is located in the angle with the hall.

Inside, the main beams are stop-chamfered. Additionally, there is a timber-framed single-storey and attic wing that adjoins the east side elevation of the cross-wing, as well as a large two-storey 19th-century brick addition that adjoins the south side elevation of the hall.
