Description
The Lower Beanhall Farmhouse dates to 1564, with significant alterations in the mid-18th century, mid-19th century, and mid-20th century, and additions in the 20th century. It is partly timber-framed with rendered infill on a sandstone base, and partly brick, with plain tiled roofs, some of which are half-hipped. The main part, aligned east/west, consists of five bays – two timber-framed and three brick. A large chimney with three star-shaped stacks is located in the second bay from the west end. A single-bay brick wing extends to the south-west, featuring an external chimney with tiled offsets on its west-facing elevation.
The farmhouse is two storeys and has an attic. The timber-framed section has close-set studding from the sill to the girding-beam, and three rows of square panels from the girding-beam to the wall-plate. The collar and tie-beam truss at the west gable end features three collars, six struts to the lower collar, two to the central collar and an upper collar, and a concave V-strut in the apex. The western elevation has tiled weatherings at the first floor and attic levels, originating from shaped brackets, continuing around the framed part of the side elevations. A 20th-century bay window occupies the ground floor, with a central half-glazed door. Above it is a five-light ovolo wood-mullioned window, and a similar four-light window illuminates the attic. The date "1564" is carved into the apex of the gable. The brick wing has a prominent external chimney.
The south-facing entrance elevation features a four-light and a two-light casement window on the ground floor, two three-light first-floor casements, and a 20th-century lean-to porch with a half-glazed door and cambered head at the main entrance. The gable end of the brick wing to the left has a ground and first floor four-light casement. The interior was not inspected. A single-storey addition from the 20th century is attached to the east gable end.
