Description

The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church built between 1864 and 1865 by architect W J Hopkins. Constructed of sandstone with a machine tile roof, the church features a chancel, nave, and a tower located at the north-east corner between the chancel and nave. The tower has three stages and is topped with a stone broach spire. It includes two ogee-headed windows at the belfry stage and a single ogee-headed window on each side of the first stage. The chancel consists of two bays and has a trefoil-headed window in the east bay, while the east window features three trefoiled lights under a 2-centred head with a label. The nave has three bays, with a pair of trefoiled windows in the two eastern bays, and the west bay is occupied by a gabled north porch. The west window is a rose window under a 2-centred head with a label and engaged shafts to the responds.

Inside, the chancel arch is 2-centred and consists of two orders, with the inner order chamfered and dying into the responds. The tower arch is segmental pointed and also has two orders. The chancel roof has two bays with arch-braced trusses, while the nave features a scissor-braced common rafter/collar roof with ashlar pieces. The fittings include plain pews, a low stone pulpit in the south-west corner of the chancel, and fragments of two medieval tomb slabs set into the floor of the porch. The church is built on the site of a medieval chapel, and the chapelry of Bradley, which was part of Fladbury, became a parish in 1862.
