Description

Gable House is a Grade II* listed house dating from the early 17th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble and features a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and consists of a four-bay main range with a one-bay cross-wing on the right. The windows are rebated and chamfered, each with hoods. The outer bays of the main range contain windows set within blocked doorways; the left one has plain reveals, while the right has a chamfered surround with a canted head. The two central bays feature windows with four and five lights, and the first-floor windows are three-light windows set within gables, each with a blind one-light window under the apex. The cross-wing includes a four-light window with a king mullion on the ground floor, a three-light window on the first floor, and a two-light window that once lit an attic. The current entrance is through a 20th-century porch on the left side of the main range. The gables are coped, and there are chimneys located to the left of the former doorway in the fourth bay, to the right of the cross-wing, and in front of the ridge to the right of the first bay. At the rear, aligned with the blocked front door, is a similar chamfered surround that contains a 17th-century studded door. A 17th-century rear wing features a 20th-century two-storey bay window facing south.

Inside, the ground floor rooms have chamfered spine beams. There is a stone inglenook with a chamfered bressummer backing onto the former through-passage. The rear wing has deeply-chamfered cross and axial ceiling beams, along with a moulded stone fireplace that has a canted head. On the first floor, the cross-wing is divided by a timber-framed partition made from reused timber, and the purlins are exposed. Part of a truss at the junction with the main range is also visible.
