Description
No. 27 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop with offices. It dates from the mid-18th century and has undergone later alterations, including the addition of a shop front in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick laid in Flemish bond, featuring rubbed brick arches and a timber cornice. The roof is concealed with a truncated stack on the right side.
The structure has three storeys and four first-floor windows. The first and second floors are fitted with 6/6 sash windows in plain reveals, with flat arches, and the second-floor windows have sills. A moulded cornice and a low, coped parapet are present, along with five tie-rod ends between the first and second floors. To the left, there is a rainwater head and fall-pipe.
The ground floor retains a continuous Victorian shop front. The entrance on the left features a five-panel door with an overlight. The shop front includes a plinth and plate-glass windows that are divided by slender mullions, with panes that are curved on plan and canted in towards a further off-centre right entrance, which has a glazed door with a lower panel. A continuous frieze is divided into panes by slender mullions, and fluted Ionic pilasters are located at the ends and to the right of the left-hand entrance, topped with a dentil entablature. Acanthus modillions surmount the pilasters, with two at the centre, and the crowning cornice is decorated with foliate designs.
The building was demolished and rebuilt in 1974, but the facade facing onto High Street remains significant for its 18th-century fabric and impressive 19th-century shop front.
