Description

This is a house, now operating as a restaurant with a flat above, dating to the 16th and 17th centuries, with later additions and alterations including a mid-19th century refacing and shop front. The structure is timber frame with stucco infill and a front facade, featuring a stone architrave to the entrance and a plain tile roof. There are two brick stacks at the rear.

The exterior is three storeys high, with three first-floor windows. The first floor has 6/6 sash windows, the second floor has 3/3 sashes, all set in plain reveals with sills. The shop front has plate-glass windows, tiled aprons, pilasters, and a continuous frieze and cornice. An off-centre entrance has a part-glazed door. A further blocked entrance is located to the left, with a round arch.

The left gable end displays square panels of timber framing. The rear of the building retains extensive evidence of timber framing, including small square panels, corner posts, and diagonal braces to the gables. There is a jetty over the first floor at the rear.

Inside, the wall to the right at ground floor has small square panels of timber framing. A closed string, dogleg staircase has short rod-on-vase balusters and a shaped handrail. A fireplace in a rear room features a massive timber bressumer with two levels of roll moulding and one level of hollow moulding. To the front, part of the right wall has large square panels of timber framing with diagonal braces. Another fireplace has a chamfered bressumer beam. Some posts remain, although the surrounding framing has been removed. A hall to the left retains a mosaic and Minton tile floor.

The building is part of a group that includes numbers 26-34 (even) Sidbury and numbers 2-16 (consecutive) Edgar Street.
