Description
This is a house, later used as offices, dating to the 1730s, with subsequent additions and alterations. The exterior is red-brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stone sills and a stucco lintel. It has a plain tile roof and brick stacks at the ends, the one on the left shared with the adjacent property. A cast-iron grille is also present.
The building has a double-depth plan with a central hall and staircase. It is arranged over three storeys, with a half-basement and an attic, and features one window on the first floor. A chamfered plinth supports a grille. The first floor has a wide, canted bay window on a wine-glass stem, featuring six-pane, horned sashes and pilasters, topped by a balustrade. The second floor has two nine-pane sashes in near-flush frames, with sills and elliptical arches above. A moulded cornice runs along the top. The ground floor entrance features a six-raised-and-fielded-panel door with Gothic glazing bars to the fanlight, and a hood supported by brackets. To the right is a tripartite window with six-pane sashes between two two-pane sashes, where the lintel is designed as channelled voussoirs. A box dormer window is present in the attic. The rear of the building retains eight-pane and eight-by-twelve pane sashes.
Inside, the front ground-floor room has a fireplace in an Aesthetic Movement style, with decorative tiles. The hallway includes a panelled dado and an open-string staircase with rod and bobbin balusters extending to the full height of the space. The rear kitchen features a tall, wide fireplace with a keystoned surround, along with a two-panel door with HL hinges. A barrel-vaulted basement incorporates a coal chute. The first floor has a two-raised-and-fielded-panel door with HL hinges, and a Victorian-style tiled fireplace in the front room. A rear room has a bolection-moulded fireplace with Delft tiles decorated with floral motifs, along with two further two-panel doors. The second floor also features similar doors and a Victorian fireplace in the front room. A six-panel door is found in the attic.
The building forms a significant group with numbers 2-16 Edgar Street, 28-34 Sidbury, 12 College Precincts, Tower House (number 1 Severn Street), and Edgar Tower (College Green). Edgar Street itself is a fine example of a Georgian street and contributes to the setting of the Cathedral.
