Description

The building at 7 Edgar Street is a house, later used as offices and subsequently reverted to residential use, dating from around 1760, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of reddish-orange brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with ashlar quoins, stone and timber detailing to the doorcase, and a slate roof. A cast-iron boot scraper is also present. The house is four storeys high with three windows on the first floor. The ground floor windows are 6/6 sashes, the first floor has taller 6/9 sashes, the second floor windows are 6/6 sashes, and the third floor has 3/6 sashes. All windows are set within flat arches constructed of gauged brick and feature fluted keystones. The entrance door is a five-panel design, with the upper three panels being raised and fielded, and the lower panels being flush and beaded. The overlight features lozenge glazing bars and stained glass, set within similarly panelled reveals. The doorcase is characterised by fluted pilasters, a frieze with flutes and fleurons, and a cornice.

The interior includes a closed string dogleg staircase with stick balusters and a shaped handrail. Fluted pilasters are present to the ground-floor windows.

7 Edgar Street is part of a significant group with numbers 2-16 (consecutive) on Edgar Street, numbers 28-34 (even) on Sidbury, number 12 College Precincts, Tower House at number 1 Severn Street, and Edgar Tower on College Green. Edgar Street itself is a fine example of a Georgian street and contributes to the setting of the Cathedral.
