Description
This outbuilding, located about 35 yards south-west of Wichenford Court, is now a visitors' centre and carriage house. It dates from the 17th century, with 19th-century additions and mid-20th-century alterations. The structure is L-shaped, featuring a combination of timber framing with brick infill and brick construction, all topped with tiled roofs. The timber-framed section consists of two framed bays oriented on an west-east axis, while a two-bay brick cross-wing is at the east gable end. The building is single storey with an attic.
The timber-framed part has four square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, long straight braces in the lower corners, and a queen strut truss in the gable end. On the main south elevation, the timber-framed section includes a multi-paned 20th-century door and a small loft door next to the brick wing. The cross-wing gable end features a ground floor casement window and an attic light, along with double doors for carriage access on the east side elevation.
Inside, the timber-framed section is floored, and the roof has single, trenched purlins along with an interrupted tie-beam truss. The 19th-century part includes a gallery at the south end, with a balustrade that was originally part of the old 17th-century staircase from Wichenford Court.
