Description
Lower Kyrewood is a farmhouse with an adjoining outbuilding and hop kiln, located in Tenbury. The building dates from the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-18th century, mid-19th century, and late 20th century. It features a combination of timber framing with painted brick and rendered infill on a rubble base, as well as brick construction, all topped with plain tiled roofs. Some sections have gable-end parapets with kneelers and brick stacks.
The layout consists of a hall and a cross-wing. The hall is made up of three framed bays aligned north-west to south-east, with a central chimney that creates a lobby entrance. The cross-wing, likely comprising five bays, is located at the south-east end and has a large external brick chimney with offsets and a lean-to bread oven on its south-east side. The building is two storeys high, with the framing of the hall featuring four panels from sill to wall-plate, supported by short straight upper corner braces. The cross-wing panels are smaller and more rectangular. The roof structure includes collar and tie-beam trusses with three struts below the collar and V-struts above.
On the north-east front elevation, the hall section has three ground floor and two first floor 2-light casements. The central entrance features a ledged and battened door that leads into a large lobby. The cross-wing gable end has a large multi-paned window on the ground floor and a 2-light casement on the first floor. In the angle, there are two ground floor 2-light casements and two first floor single-light casements.
The former outbuilding and hop kiln are attached to the south-east side of the cross-wing. The outbuilding is likely two bays and two storeys, featuring a ground floor single-light casement with a cambered head, a first floor 2-light casement, and a 20th-century stable door on its north-east elevation. The hop kiln, located at the south-east end of the outbuilding, has a circular plan with a conical roof and cowl. It includes three ground floor 2-light casements with cambered heads and three skylights.
