Description
The retaining wall and terracing, located about 60 yards east and 80 yards south-east of Holt Castle, date from the early 18th century. The retaining wall is constructed of handmade brick, featuring stone copings and angled brick buttresses. It runs parallel to the castle on a north-west to south-east axis for approximately 100 yards before turning at a right angle to extend about 30 yards in a south-east direction. This section includes a small doorway flanked by brick pilasters and topped with a wrought iron gate. The terracing extends from the gateway to the south-east corner of the castle and includes a flight of stone steps next to the castle. The south terracing appears to preserve a 16th-century arrangement.
