Description

The fortification wall adjoining Holt Castle at the south-west corner dates from the 15th century. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble, measuring approximately 3 feet thick and 32 yards long, running westwards at a right angle to the castle. Part of the wall features battlements, with merlons that have ridged capping, and there is a wall-walk located a few feet below the height of the crenellation on the northern side. At the western end of the wall, there is a doorway that leads from the forecourt to the garden, which has a two-centred doorhead and a wrought iron gate.
