Description
The retaining wall to the terrace on the north and east sides of Thurland Castle dates from the 1880s, although it incorporates earlier remains. The terrace retaining wall features a crenellated design and includes buttresses with offsets. The north and south corners of the terrace have rounded projections that are treated as bastions. On the north side, the wall returns against the house, while on the south side, it connects with the wall leading from the house to the entrance gateway. This connecting wall contains two moulded doorways and, towards its northern end, features some re-set stone dressings that appear to date from around 1600.
