Description
The bridge over the moat at Thurland Castle, along with its entrance gateway, was built in the 1880s by the architectural firm Paley and Austin. Constructed from sandstone rubble, the bridge features a single segmental arch and embattled parapets topped with saddle-backed coping. The parapets end at octagonal piers on the southern side and meet buttresses at the northern side, which leads to the gateway. The gateway itself has a moulded segmental pointed arch with a hood and a saddle-back coping that steps down in the center. Above the arch is a panel that is carved with a shield of arms.
