Description
Dunley Hall is a house with a late 16th century core that was refronted and altered in the mid-19th century, with a lower wing added in the late 18th century. The original structure is timber-framed, with sandstone bases for the stacks and red brick shafts. The exterior features plastered brick refronting, a painted brick added wing, and tiled roofs.
Originally, the house had a central hall with a through-passage and projecting cross-wings, with the later wing added to the lower end. One end stack is now enclosed, and there is one central stack. The building has two storeys with attics. The main garden facade is located at the rear of the entrance elevation, with the gable end of the added 18th century wing to the left adjoining the main block.
The facade features a mix of window styles, including 1:1:3:1 arrangements, gables, and a central dormer with painted 19th century scalloped bargeboards. The fenestration throughout is from the 19th century, with glazing bar sashes on the first floor and attics, and three French casements on the ground floor. The ground floor of the central hall block projects level with the wings and has a lean-to roof that forms a porch over the door to the left. The stacks have three conjoined star-plan shafts.
Inside, the structure reveals incomplete framing of the earlier core, possibly with close-studding on the ground floor, an inserted cross-beam ceiling, and a late 17th century roof structure. The upper end features large altered fireplaces.
