Description

Witley Manor is a house dating from the early 17th century, with later additions and alterations. It features a timber-framed structure with rendered brick and lath and plaster infill, a tiled roof, and brick shafts with a sandstone base for the main stack, along with sandstone lining in the cellar. The building has a roughly L-shaped plan, with a right forward projecting wing and a later extension at the rear. The main entrance is located to the left, while the main stack at the rear of the right wing is now enclosed, with an additional stack at the rear and a third later stack on the left gable end.

The main elevation is two storeys high, with the right gabled projecting wing consisting of two framed bays, a central gabled framed bay, and two further bays to the left that have a later raised roof. The fenestration is irregular: the first floor has a 20th-century metal easement window to the left, a single casement window, and a three-light ovolo moulded mullioned window with metal casements and leading to the central ground bay, along with a similar window in the right wing. The ground floor features a two-light leaded casement window to the left and a five-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window with leaded metal casements in the right wing. There is a 20th-century partly glazed door to the central gabled bay, accessed by stone steps.

The framing consists of two panels from the sill to the mid-rail and two panels from the mid-rail to the wall-plate, with diagonal bracing from the sill to the post at the right gable end. The gables include queen struts and V-struts, and there is continuous weather planking at the lintels. Toward the rear of the right wing, the stack has two-star plan shafts linked by an arch. A heavy ledged door has been resited at the rear of the later extension.

Inside, there is a fine cross-beamed ceiling with some ovolo moulded chamfers, and the main room of the right wing features 17th-century panelling. The altered Tudor-arched stone fireplace has a large wooden overmantel with a Jacobean strapwork design. The window contains some stained glass panes with heraldic designs, likely from the 19th century. The building is documented as having a pair of cruck blades, although these were not visible in June 1984. Witley Manor was formerly known as Wall House.
