Description

The Church of St Mary Magdalene is a parish church that dates back to the late 12th century, featuring a nave and chancel, with a north transept and vestry added in 1885 by Aston Webb. The building is constructed from rubble stone and has a tiled roof, along with a shingled timber-framed belfry and a timber-framed south porch with a tiled roof.

The nave includes three Norman windows at the west end on the north, west, and south walls, as well as a cusped lancet on both the north and south walls. There are also two Perpendicular two-light windows in the south wall flanking the porch, with the window to the right of the porch being a 19th-century copy. The chancel features a cusped lancet and a Decorated two-light window in the south wall, along with a Decorated three-light east window. The north transept has a three-light Perpendicular window in the north wall, and the vestry contains a three-light Perpendicular window in the east wall. The porch showcases 19th-century Perpendicular carved infill decoration.

The belfry is adorned with a wooden sundial on the south face inscribed with "On this moment hangs eternity," and it features a golden cockerel weathervane. Inside, the nave boasts a 15th-century timber roof, a simple Norman font, and an early 17th-century altar table with altar rails that have turned balusters, now relocated to the north transept. There is a Jacobean screen with late 19th-century applied decoration, a piscina in the south chancel wall, and a remnant of Norman sculpture preserved in the north transept wall. Some windows incorporate Flemish glass.
