Description
Cornwall House is a house built in the late 17th century, with alterations made in the late 19th century. It features finely jointed handmade brick, a plain tiled roof, and shaped gable-end parapets with kneelers. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a three-course band at the first floor level, a two-course band at the attic floor level, and a moulded timber eaves cornice. It is composed of seven bays. Most of the windows are original, featuring gauged flat heads and long narrow single-light leaded casements. The outer bays of the first floor have blind windows, while the outer two bays of the ground floor have been replaced with tripartite sash windows that have cambered heads and central 8-pane sashes. The central entrance boasts its original moulded hooded timber canopy on shaped brackets, a four-panelled door with a moulded architrave, and a transom light. There are attic lights at the gable ends.
Inside, the house is one room deep with a central hall that contains the original staircase, which has moulded handrails, turned balusters, and some original square newel posts. A small locked recess in the top step is said to have been used to conceal money. The parlour to the south features an 18th-century overmantel (not in situ) and an adjacent cupboard with a semi-circular plan. The house is believed to have been built by Thomas Cornwall as a dower-house for his wife Ann.
