Description
Hooze Farmhouse and attached outbuildings is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th and early 18th century, with an early 19th-century extension and 20th-century alterations. It is timber-framed with whitewashed brick infill and partly rendered brick. The roof is covered in plain tiles, with a brick ridge and rear lateral stacks. The building follows a lobby-entry L-plan, with a rear wing on the left which may be of earlier date. It has two storeys and a semi-basement cellar.
The front features a 20th-century wall with a two-window range of casement windows, a central door, and an open gabled porch. The right end shows a cross window and a section of timber framing featuring tension brace and jowled posts, alongside five panels of framing. The rear of the main range has a similar blocked window and timber framing. The rear wing has eight panels of slightly heavier timbering, a two-light staircase casement, a later projecting brick stack, and a small lean-to extension. The rear gable includes timber framing, a two-light casement, and a ciderhouse from the early 19th century, containing a complete cider mill and press at a lower level.
The left side of the house has brick walling to the basement with a door and window, and framing above with three cross windows. A projecting, two-storey brick wing from the early 19th century has doors and casement windows, and a brick end stack.
The interior includes an open fireplace with a bressummer, chamfered beams, old purlins, and clasped principals, some of which are visible. The early 19th-century wing has an open fireplace and a bake oven. Group Value: The building contributes to the group value of its setting.
