Description
Norgrovesend Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The building features sandstone rubble up to the first floor level, with timber framing and brick infill above, topped with plain tiled roofs. It has a hall and cross-wing plan, with the hall consisting of two framed bays oriented east to west. The upper bay contains a large fireplace with a brick ridge stack and follows a lobby-entry layout. The cross-wing at the east gable end also has two framed bays. The farmhouse is two storeys high with an attic.
The framing includes two rows of square panels at the wall-plate, while the cross-wing features collar and tie-beam trusses with two collars, five struts to the lower collar, and two to the upper collar. On the south front elevation, the hall section has a 2-light casement and a large 20th-century single-light window on the ground floor, along with a 2-light casement on the first floor. There is a 20th-century lean-to porch next to the cross-wing, which includes a 2-light casement and a 4-panelled door. The gable end of the cross-wing has 2-light casements on both the ground and first floors, along with an attic light.
Inside, the main beams are stop-chamfered, and there are large back-to-back fireplaces. Originally, the house had a cruciform plan with a wing attached to the east elevation of the cross-wing, but this wing was demolished in the mid-20th century.
