Description

The Packhorse Bridge on Dick Brook, located south of the Church of St Peter, is a bridge marked on maps as Newbridge. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, though it may be older. The bridge is constructed of hammer-dressed ashlar and features a single arch with a continuous impost band and prominent keystones. The arch is made up of V-jointed voussoirs and is flanked by plain pilasters. The quadrant abutments are partially damaged, and the parapet was obscured as of June 1984. This bridge is possibly connected to an iron smelting works complex on Dick Brook that dates back to the mid-17th century, as the furnace, forge, locks, and the pack-horse bridge all appear to be made from similar large, well-dressed sandstone blocks.
