Description

The monument to the Crane family is located about 5 meters south of the Church of St Peter in Astley. This chest tomb dates from the mid-19th century and is made of sandstone ashlar in a modified Romanesque style. It features a moulded plinth and capping, with a central inscription panel on one long side, which is set within a blind triple arcade motif. The outer edge is supported by rounded shafts, while the central arch is held up by double brackets. The flanking inscription panels have ogee heads and vertical chevron motifs along the edges. This family tomb commemorates Elizabeth and Edward Crane and their son, who were formerly of Seedgreen. Some inscriptions on the tomb are partly illegible.
