Description
The Old School House is a former school building, now converted into a dwelling, dated 1743. It is constructed of English bond brick on a sandstone plinth and features a tiled roof. The building has a modified U-plan and consists of one storey and an attic, with a basement at the rear. The central door is flanked by three-light windows, all with segmental heads, which have been replaced in the 20th century. The building has a cogged eaves cornice and three hipped dormers, also from the 20th century, with raised verges. A brick chimney at the north gable has been restored in the 20th century. Above the doorway, there is a tablet with an oval inscription panel that reads, "Mrs Mercy Pope/ some time relict/ of Higgons James/ of this Parish Esqr/ and afterward wife/ to Bromwich Pope Esqr/ was ye charitable/ FOUNDER/ of this School/ MDCCXLII." Additionally, there is a 19th-century wash-house complex under a hipped roof, complete with a pump, located at the rear.
