Description

The Clock Tower, located to the north of Abberley Hall, was built between 1883 and 1884 by architect J P St Aubyn for John Joseph Jones. It is constructed from coursed and squared rubble, with red stone at the lower part and buff ashlar at the upper part. The tower features a battered, distressed ashlar plinth and quoins, along with freestone dressings, showcasing a striking blend of 13th and 14th century Gothic styles.

The structure consists of three main stages plus a bell stage topped with a spire. The lowest stage includes a moulded, pointed doorway with a large round hoodmould that extends around as a band over the plinth. Above the door is a panel of arms and a single plain light window. The sides feature paired and single round-headed lights at intermediate levels. The second stage has corbelled out oriel windows with a 1:2:1 light arrangement, each with transoms and trefoil heads, along with a sundial and plain pointed lights above.

The third stage is further corbelled out and supported by brackets, featuring octagonal corner turrets with blank arcaded upper parts topped with spirelets. Each side of the tower has a clock face with straight, crocketted, and enriched hoodmoulds, and paired trefoil-headed lights above. A bracketed cornice and parapet with gargoyles lead to the octagonal bell chamber stage, which includes 2-light mullion and transom lights under gablets, alternating with single lights, all adorned with trefoil heads. The squat spire features lucarnes and quatrefoils in alternate bays. A semi-circular stair tower is attached to the lower stages on the right-hand elevation. The Clock Tower is noted for its high landscape and picturesque value.
