Description

The building at 2, 6 and 8 Worcester Road dates to around 1818 and was designed by Samuel and John Deykes, initially serving as the Royal Library. It is constructed of stucco with slate roofs. The south-facing elevation is bow-fronted, with a semi-circular ground floor featuring a balustraded entablature, a frieze, and a moulded cornice, supported by four Ionic columns; the spaces between the columns have been filled with sash windows. Above, the first and second floors have a full-height, semi-circular bow, each floor containing a curved three-light sash window. The west elevation has a rusticated ground floor and three cambered-head openings, the central one containing a square-headed door, with plate glass windows in the side openings. Three sash windows with glazing bars are present on the first and second floors. The overall design incorporates an architrave, frieze, cornice, and blocking course with a plain central pediment and plain pilasters between the windows. Moulded architraves, cornice hoods, and consoles adorn the first-floor windows. A four-window extension to the north (Nos 6 and 8) shares a similar design but with a simpler treatment, lacking pilasters and a pediment, and including a left-hand cambered archway.
