Description
Newhouse Farmhouse and the adjoining malthouse and two hop kilns have been converted into one dwelling. The farmhouse dates from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-18th century and mid-19th century, and it was restored in the mid-20th century. The building features part timber framing with brick refacing and replacement walling, and the gable ends are pebble dashed with brick additions. It has plain tiled roofs. The main part consists of three framed bays aligned north-west to south-east, with a large external rubble chimney featuring offsets and a brick stack at the north-west gable end, as well as a large chimney at the rear of the central bay with a brick stack at the base of the roof pitch. The structure is two storeys high with an attic. All the windows are 20th-century casements.
The north-east front elevation has a regular arrangement with two ground floor and three first floor cross-casements, along with two skylights. There is a central 20th-century hipped-roofed porch that includes a central door and side lights, and attic lights are present in the gable ends. The interior is said to retain original framing and features a large fireplace in the north-west ground floor room. The adjoining malthouse has four bays and is single storey with an attic that includes dormers. The ground floor has a 2-light and two 3-light casements, as well as glazed double doors. There are four flat-roofed 20th-century half-dormers, two with 3-light casements and two with 2-light casements. The hop kilns are square in shape with pyramidal slate roofs, and the front elevation features a ground and first floor 3-light casement.
