Description

A barn and stable, dating from the 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. The barn and stable are timber-framed and weatherboarded, set upon sandstone and brick bases, with brick replacement walling and later additions. The roof is covered in corrugated iron and plain tiles. The barn has four bays running east to west; a wagon bay in the third bay from the west end features opposed cart entrances and a gabled midstrey on the south side. The interior includes long rectangular panels from sill to wall-plate, long straight braces in the lower corners, collar and tie-beam trusses with two struts at the west end, and two raking struts for intermediate trusses. There is a single tier of trenched purlins. Lean-to additions, dating from the 19th century, flank the midstrey on the south side, each with two windows. A stable adjoins the east gable end and features a cogged eaves cornice, two blocked doorways with cambered heads, inserted 8-pane windows, a stable door with a cambered head, and a loft opening. The barn and stable are located prominently facing the main elevation of West Lodge and enclose the farmyard to the north.
