Description
Bowling Green Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from around 1700, built on an older site, and has undergone alterations and extensions in the early 19th century and mid-20th century. The building is constructed of brick, partly handmade, and sits on a chamfered sandstone plinth. It features hipped, shallow-pitched slate roofs with overhanging eaves and rear stacks. The farmhouse is two storeys high with a cellar and has a three-course band between the storeys.
The facade consists of three bays, with the central bay being narrow and slightly projecting forward. The windows have cambered heads and moulded architraves, with the outer bays featuring 20-pane sash windows on the ground floor and 16-pane sash windows on the first floor. The central first-floor window has been replaced by 20th-century glazed double doors in an enlarged opening. The central entrance is highlighted by a square moulded flat canopy supported by slender tapered columns, wide panelled pilasters, panelled reveals and soffit, and half-glazed double doors. Above the canopy is an ornate wrought iron balcony.
Inside, the farmhouse retains its 19th-century ceiling mouldings and a dog-leg staircase. On the left side elevation, there are truncated remains of a large original external chimney with offsets. A large range projects from the rear left. The left and central bay of the front range, along with the left part of the rear range, are the only parts that survive from the older house. The right bay was added in the 19th century to create a symmetrical front elevation, during which time the roof was altered and reduced in height, and the rear range was extended. Originally, the farmhouse was part of the Grafton Manor estate.
