Description

The Old Farmhouse is a late 16th-century former farmhouse with later 19th-century alterations, located on Stockwell Road in Tettenhall, Wolverhampton. It is shown on Ordnance Survey maps as Tettenhall Farm. The building is constructed of roughcast and plastered brick, with ashlar dressings and some timber framing, and has a tile roof with brick stacks, one of which is painted.

The farmhouse has an L-shaped plan. The main range is two storeys high, while a wing to the right features a timber-framed first floor. Windows generally have leaded glazing. A ground floor window has a casement and a dripstone, with a plaster date of 1520. The wing has a canted bay window with a double-chamfered-mullioned and transomed window, with a layout of 1:3:1 lights. A left return has a three-light window, while the first floor of the wing includes a four-light window, a three-light casement to the return, and a three-light wooden-mullioned attic window. A lean-to re-entrant porch, projecting slightly forward, provides access to a plank door. A projecting end stack is present, and the wing has a cross-axial stack and a lateral stack to the right of a stair projection on the right return. The rear elevation has varied window openings.

Inside, the rear of the farmhouse reveals timber-framed cross walls. A left room features chamfered beams and a large fireplace with a bressummer. Some exposed wattle-and-daub panelling is visible on the first floor, and the roof trusses form cross walls. The upper ends of the principal rafters do not meet, suggesting either a widening of the building at some point or the re-use of timbers. The wing contains an enriched 19th-century fireplace, collar and tie beam trusses, and old purlins. One cambered tie beam is present, and one truss incorporates plastered infill.
