Description

Avenue House is a house, dating from around 1840, and later altered. It is now used as a residential home for the elderly. The building is constructed of stuccoed brick, with a hipped slate roof and stuccoed chimney stacks. It has a double-depth plan and a symmetrical 5-window facade facing the garden. The ground floor is rusticated; a sill band runs across the first floor, and there is a top frieze and cornice, with quoin strips. The ground floor features a French window with canted bays on either side. The first floor has windows with architraves, apron panels, and 4-pane sashes. A verandah supported by cast-iron columns has an openwork frieze and a swept roof. A cross-axial stack features round shafts with cornices. The sides and rear of the house are similar in style; a later window is on the left return, while the right return has a projecting ingle breast, a porch with a round-headed entrance and a four-fielded-panelled door. The rear elevation has a recessed stair window and entrance, as well as a lateral stack. The interior includes stained glass in the stair window and a rear room depicting Shakespearian characters, moulded cornices, and a Rococo plaster ceiling in the drawing room. Mid-18th century cornices are also present.
