Description
The House by the Church is a house that was formerly the vicarage, built around 1820, with a late 19th-century rear wing and additional work from the 1890s by the Guild of Handicrafts. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and has a plastered return and rear wing. It features a hipped slate roof with brick stacks and is designed in an L-shape. The house has three storeys and a three-window range, with a first-floor sill band and an altered top cornice. The windows include rubbed brick flat arches, with 12-pane tripartite sashes on the ground floor, 4-pane horned sashes on the first floor, and pivoted casements on the second floor. The entrance is marked by a Tuscan porch and a door that includes a stained glass panel. There are lateral stacks on the return, and a lantern is located at the left end. The left return features a 16-pane sash on the first floor and a two-storey, four-window wing with leaded casements and a hipped canted bay window, which has a porch beneath a tiled roof to the left. The right return has a two-storey canted bay and French windows. Inside, there are some panelled rooms adorned with deep relief plaster friezes and fireplaces designed by the Guild of Handicrafts, showcasing motifs of peacocks, tulips, and daffodils.
