Description

The Buttery is a house dating from the late 16th century that was dismantled and re-erected at its current location in 1938-1939. It features a timber frame set on a brick plinth and has a tiled roof with a brick cross-axial stack. The building has a right-angle plan with a gable facing and consists of two storeys plus an attic. The close-studded framing includes a jettied gable supported by an ovolo-moulded bressummer, and there are two concave lozenges painted below the first-floor window. The windows are fitted with leaded casements and iron opening lights, with the first floor featuring a canted oriel and a small window in the attic. To the left of the window is a large plaster panel, which was likely the original entrance. The returns of the building have square-panelled framing, with the left return displaying a plaster ground floor and entrance, and the windows also have leaded glazing. The rear is similar, with a 20th-century single-storey kitchen addition. Inside, there are some stop-chamfered beams and 20th-century fireplaces made from 17th-century brick. The Buttery was originally located in the centre of Shifnal and was moved to its current site to accommodate road widening. It is noted as a particularly good example of the work of Major Hutchinson-Smith, who constructed Castlecroft Gardens using salvaged materials from demolished timber-framed buildings.
