Description
The North Portal of the Netherton Tunnel, located approximately 130 meters northeast of Dudley Road West in Tividale, is an entrance to a canal tunnel that opened in 1858. The structure is made of brick and features a sandstone keystone. It has a round arch with a moulded arch band, and the flanking walls are battered with a concave plan. The parapet is topped with brick coping. The Dudley Canal was merged with the Birmingham Canal Navigations in 1846, leading to the construction of the Netherton Tunnel to enhance connections between the two systems. The tunnel is 3027 yards long and is notable for its late construction date and width, as it includes two towpaths. Initially lit by gas, it was later upgraded to electric lighting.
