Description
The South Portal of the Netherton Tunnel, located at Warrens Hall Park on the Netherton Tunnel Branch of the Birmingham Canal, is an entrance to a canal tunnel that opened in 1858. The structure is made of brick and features a sandstone keystone. It has a round arch with a moulded arch band, and the flanking walls are battered and have a concave plan. The parapet is topped with brick coping. The Netherton Tunnel was constructed to enhance connections between the Dudley Canal, which was amalgamated with the Birmingham Canal Navigations in 1846, and it measures 3027 yards in length. This tunnel is notable for its late construction date and its width, as it includes two towpaths. Initially lit by gas, it was later upgraded to electric lighting.
