Description
Top Lock at Factory Locks, located approximately 15 meters west of Factory Road Bridge on the Birmingham Canal, was constructed around 1829 and designed by engineer Thomas Telford. This lock is part of a flight of three locks and is built of brick with sandstone kerbs in the lock chambers, although some of these have been replaced by concrete. It features cast iron sluice gear on the upper side and has single gates. This lock raises Telford's New Main Line on the Birmingham Level up to the 473 feet Wolverhampton Level.
