Description

A First World War memorial, unveiled in 1922.

MATERIALS: granite.

DESCRIPTION: Woodsetton War Memorial is located on Sedgely Road, close to the junction with Parkes Hall Road.

It consists of a wheel-headed cross on a collared shaft. The cross shaft surmounts a pedestal, square on plan, with chamfered corners. This is set on a three-stepped base which is surrounded by a low wall with finials at the corners.

The north face of the memorial bears an inscription which reads ERECTED/ BY/ PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION/ IN MEMORY OF THOSE/ KILLED AND IN HONOUR/ OF THE MEN WHO WENT/ FROM WOODSETTON TO/ FIGHT IN THE GREAT/ EUROPEAN WAR 1914 – 1918. The east face of the memorial reads KILLED IN ACTION/ OR DIED OF WOUNDS/ SWAN VILLAGE/ (NAMES), while the west face reads KILLED IN ACTION/ OR DIED OF WOUNDS/ WOODSETTON/ (NAMES)/ PARKES HALL/ (NAMES).
